Pruning

Proper pruning helps establish and maintain healthier, stronger, safer, and more aesthetically pleasing trees. It is also one of the wisest, long-term investments you can make in your property.

There are many reasons to prune trees:

IMPROVE HEALTH

Deadwood is the prime breeding ground for decay, disease, and insect problems. Removing deadwood is an important pruning objective.

IMPROVE STRUCTURE

Poorly attached and weak or broken branches are very common, more so in certain species of trees. Proper understanding of branch attachment is essential when deciding which branches to remove.

REDUCE HAZARDS

Many large old trees can become hazardous; a trained arborist can evaluate and reduce risks through proper pruning.

IMPROVE APPEARANCE

Most of us enjoy a good looking tree. Crown cleaning, along with lightening of excessively long braches, can return a tree to its natural beauty.

When to Prune

Many trees and shrubs can be pruned at any time. One old saying tells us, "The best time to prune is when your saw is sharp." Some tress—such as American Elm, Apple, Crabapple, and other disease prone trees—are best pruned when dormant. Some flowering shrubs, such as Lilac, are best pruned soon after flowering to allow new buds to form. For most plants the how is more important than the when.

Pruning Standards & Specifications

Mountain High Tree Service adheres to all industry guidelines, including the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) "A 300" Pruning Standards. We also use our own written specifications. This clarifies the work to be performed.

Improper Pruning

As beneficial as proper pruning can be, improper pruning can be quite the opposite. Poorly made cuts, excessive thinning, topping, or other bad practices can destroy a tree. Always understand why a branch is being pruned before making that cut.

Young Trees

Corrective pruning of young trees can quickly and easily establish a better-structured tree that will become stronger and require less maintenance in the future.

Storm Damage

Hundreds of thousands of shade and street trees in the United States are storm damaged by snow, wind, and lightning each year. Estimates of property value loss from tree storm damage can approach one billion dollars annually depending on how severe the weather is. Proper maintenance is a must for our urban forest.
