Care   Winter Watering

Your trees and shrubs
need a good drink.

(10% off offer in January)

On average, it takes up to 12" of snow to equal just 1" of actual moisture.

We are glad it snowed to provide some moisture, however, winter watering is still essential to maintain healthy trees in Colorado. Mountain High offers a Deep Root Watering service that ensures moisture is placed in and around the critical root system. See MHT on Channel 4 News concerning this need: Click here »

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Denver Metro Area has received 1 1/2" of precipitation since July. Homeowners should evaluate their ability to water their trees, shrubs and turf areas, and don’t be fooled when it snows. Dry winter conditions result in serious damage to newly planted landscapes as well as mature and established trees. Damage to vegetation includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Desiccation and dieback to fibrous
    (nutrient absorbing) root tissue.
  2. Undersized leaves in the spring.
  3. Needle browning and pre-mature
    needle drop in evergreen trees.
  4. Increased susceptibility to insect attack.

Winter watering is essential to maintain healthy trees in Colorado. Mountain High offers a Deep Root Watering service that ensures moisture is placed in and around the critical root system.

A soil conditioner is added to the application to enhance the moisture retention capacity of the soil. The frequency of supplemental watering should be based on the ongoing conditions, so monitoring soil moisture should be done often throughout the winter. Supplemental watering is a task that is often ignored during the holidays as everyone’s life becomes hectic. Fortunately, Mountain High can take this burden off your shoulders. Give us a call today so we can help you all winter long.

The emphasis on preserving our environment grows every day.

While the main focus is often on car and manufacturing emissions, we can’t ignore things we do in and around our homes. In recent years the Arboriculture industry has developed programs to reduce chemical use while also increasing the overall health of landscapes and ecosystems. The most prominent program known as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) encompasses visual inspections of plant material, fertilization, pheromone traps, release of beneficial insects, and chemical applications in order to monitor and manipulate damaging levels of pests.

Studies have shown that a quality IPM program can reduce pesticide use by up to 80% and yield less plant damage than traditional “spray everything" plant health care programs. The strength of an IPM program comes from the timely inspections of the plant material. The focus of the program is to monitor pest levels and react with the best control option which is not always a chemical treatment. The frequency and intensity of the inspections can be based on the species of plant material and their likelihood to suffer issues during various times of year. Meeting with an Arborist to discuss your landscapes needs and tendencies is a great way to get started.

Care   Vole Damage

We are finding an increase in the Vole population throughout the Denver Metro Area. The resulting damage will be easily evident in the spring.

The Meadow Vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) is the primary rodent pest along the Front Range in many homeowners’ landscapes. These rodents damage landscapes by girdling small shrubs and mature trees alike. Their damage often extends into turf areas during periods when snow cover is present to provide them protection from predators such as owls, foxes, and hawks. The blunt faced and short tailed vole will tunnel through the turf and leave a meandering path of destruction to be found in the spring. The damage can spread if the turf is not repaired.

The combination of the vole’s damage and a fast developing population produce the need to implement a control program. Vole Control Programs may include habitat modification, exclusion, repellents, trapping, and even poison baiting. Mountain High’s trained technicians can meet with you to design a program that fits your property and your family’s needs.
