We wanted to give you a heads up (if you haven't heard already) that Denver Water has declared a Stage 1 drought. Click here to learn more »

What this means to you is, now more than ever, we must use only what we need. We are informing our customers so that you can be aware and voluntarily cut back your outdoor water use to help reduce the risk of more severe watering restrictions, including limited watering times and days. These watering rules will be in effect May 1st to Oct 1st and are mandatory.

Enjoy planting your gardens and do let us know if we can answer any questions.

Warm weather this spring is creating an explosion of insect activity.

April's temperatures were unusually warm with only a few nights below freezing. Because of this, many trees such as Crabapple, Apple, Peach, and Plum have completely flowered and are well on their way to producing fruit. Most plants in our landscapes are blooming nearly two/three weeks earlier than normal too.

With this mild weather, we can expect to see an explosion of insect activity. Among the most damaging insects to look out for are Ips and Mountain Pine beetles. The high levels of chronic insects such as aphids, mites, scale, thrips and weevils that were prevalent in 2011 are expected to continue to increase this year due to the mild winter and unseasonably warm spring.

These weather conditions allow overwintering eggs to successfully make it through the winter with very little mortality. The early warm weather allows these insects to start their activity early and adds one or two extra generations to the already multi-generational insects, which puts additional pressure on our trees and shrubs.

The best way to combat high levels of insect activity is to increase the intensity and frequency of your plant monitoring. In normal seasons, a physical inspection of plant material one or two times each month is sufficient to monitor for damaging levels of pests. Because this has not been a normal spring, it may necessary to inspect your plant material once a week to stay well ahead of pest population explosions. Staying ahead of insect population increases through Plant Health Care inspections also allows you to reduce your use of pesticides by applying them only when pest levels rise to a damaging level.

For those of you who would rather have us help you, we offer a variety of inspection services for trees and shrubs to help you keep your landscape healthy and thriving. Just give our office a call and we will send someone out to see you.

Pre-emergent Applications

Pre-emergent herbicides are most effective at controlling annual grassy weeds like crabgrass, foxtail, goose grass, and barnyard grass. Fair control of annual broadleaf weeds such as purslane, spurge, and oxalis can be expected from most pre-emergents.

Pre-emergent herbicides kill very young weed seedlings but not seeds, so they must be "in place" prior to weed seed germination to be effective. Sites that warm earlier in the spring like southern exposures and turf near sidewalks tend to see some extra weed activity because weeds often germinate before the pre-emergent barrier is put down in these areas.

The extremely warm spring weather has drastically quickened the growth of weeds this year. Because of this, the pre-emergent barriers did not get a chance to fully stop many weeds before they germinated.

Also, because of the warm and very dry spring weather, pre-emergent barriers are going to break down more quickly this year. Our Lawn Department is dedicated to providing all our lawn customers with the best weed control possible, so we are going to work extra hard on post emergent control this year.
